Installing Windows 9x on a Laptop that can only access a floppy drive OR CDROM drive, but not both.
Boot the laptop with the appropriate floppy bootdisk for the version of Windows being installed. Make the hard disk bootable by using FORMAT C: /S or if already formatted use the SYS C: command.
Copy the following two files from the floppy disk to the C: drive:
mscdex.exe
oakcdrom.sys ( or your own specific cdrom driver )
(Example - A:\>copy mscdex.exe c: )
At the A:\> prompt, type in;
edit c:\autoexec.bat (this will place you in the MSDOS Edit program)
and enter the following two lines at the top of the file;
C:\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001
exit
Then press the ALT key, then the "F" key, then the "X" key. Then press ENTER to confirm saving the content of the file. This should place you back at the A:\> prompt.
Next, at the A:\> prompt, type in;
edit c:\config.sys
and enter the following line at the top of the file;
DEVICE=C:\oakcdrom.sys /D:MSCD001
(If you have your own specific cdrom driver, change the above oakcdrom.sys to your drivers file name.)
Then press the ALT key, then the "F" key, then the "X" key.Then press ENTER to confirm saving the content of the file.
Remove the floppy disk from the drive, power down the system and remove the floppy disk drive and connect the CDROM drive. Reboot the laptop. Near the end of the boot, watch for the Device Letter assigned to the CDROM drive.
