Before starting I recommend reading through these instructions fully and printing off a copy for reference during installation.
What This Does
This procedure is designed to reinstall Windows XP. It is hoped that this reinstall will fix any problems you may be experiencing by replacing any corrupt files etc.
What Do I Need?
A legitimate Microsoft Windows XP CD
Windows XP serial number
Any driver CDs which came with your computer.
What Should I Bear In Mind?
There is a small possibility that this may render your computer unbootable. Although the possibility is small, it is a possibility and we cannot be held responsible for anything. Before starting it is advisable to unplug any hardware which is not required to make the computer run, i.e. printers, scanners, game pads, and external modems.
Configuring the BIOS
It is necessary to boot off your XP CD. Most computers boot straight from the hard drive but some do not.
Switch on your computer and enter the BIOS/Setup by pressing DEL or F2 (it usually says on the screen).
(Change the boot order to boot from the CD first (how to do this is dependent on your BIOS)
Insert Windows XP CD. Save changes and restart computer. If prompted press any key to boot from CD.
Once you get to the Welcome to Setup screen, press enter.
Press F8 to agree with the licensing agreement.
It will then say searching for previous windows installation.
Your Windows installation(s) will be listed. Highlight the relevant partition and press R.
XP will install over itself. At the first reboot, go back into BIOS and set the computer to boot from the hard drive.
You may be prompted to enter CDs with drivers on. Insert these and click OK.
Next choose your Regional and Language Options. These should be set already but if they aren’t click Customize and/or Details and make any necessary changes.
Once installation is complete, I advise you to visit Windows Update and download all critical updates.
