I tried a demo version of ACT! recently. ACT! is a customer
contact program I thought might help me with all of the communications I need
to keep up with. While it is a very sophisticated program, and I have friends
who swear by it, the demo showed that it was much more than I needed.

A nice feature was in the integration ACT! has with MS Office
programs. It even adds a menu item to the Office program bars (in MS Word
and Excel for example) for quick access to ACT! functions.

After uninstalling the program however, the menu option remained.
This was annoying. ACT! isn't the only program that integrates with the MS
Office programs, and leaves this type of refuse behind. It has happens with
several PDF makers and a few drawing programs as well.

To get these program remains off the menu bar there are a few
things you can do. The first is the easiest and works with most of them. Hold
down the Alt-Key, and click and drag with the mouse, the menu item. Drag it
down into the document area until you see an X on the drag icon under the
mouse. Then drop the item. It will disappear off the menu, never to return.
A small warning here; you can do this with any menu item, so don't do it with
one you want to keep.

Some items don't go away as easy, because they are put there
by Add-ins which should have been removed by the uninstall program. However,
if they remain, they are probably in one of two areas.

In MS Word go to Tools > Options > File Locations tab
and check the location of your Startup Folder - by default it will be (Documents
and Settings\userid)\Application Data\Microsoft\Office10\Word\STARTUP.

After confirming this location go to the folder (it is hidden
so you will need to enable the view of hidden folders) and delete what looks
like the offending program file. You may have several files in this folder
if you have any other AddIns and if you can't identify the right one to delete
use trial and error and a degree of caution. Delete one, restart MS Word.
If it was the wrong one, go into your deleted items folder and restore it.
You might also consider simply moving the file to your desktop instead of
deleting it, just to check, so you can move it back if required.

You may instead - or also - find you have a remnant of this
program in what

some call the 'Office Startup Folder' - this is at (installation

root)\Office10\STARTUP where installation root is by default (Program

Files)\Microsoft Office. If there is anything from the offending program in
this folder, delete it also.

Most programs are setup so that this isn't a problem, but when
it is, it is nice to be able to clean them up.
