Aha!
I saw an exhibition of Munch's paintings in Melbourne many many moons ago, and a lot of them were essentially the same scene with that bridge and a verying number of people on it. One series stretched over several years; it had three women standing in the middle of the bridge, looking over the water. They remained more or less unchanged, as did the bridge, but the background went from sunny skies through to cloudy and then to a really dark and threatening aspect.
