removing txt in pdf

I translate text in mixed graphics/txt pdf files from one language to another.
The pdf files are prepared probably in Word, by putting the artwork in jpg into a document and adding the text on it in a text box.
In order to replace the original text I delete it first. I do it usually by converting the files to jpg, and removing the text in a graphic program. Then I use the same method, i.e. I put the file in Word document, add the new text and print the translated file to pdf.
However in this way I mar often the graphics, and handling off/on the jpg also impairs the artwork.
I am looking for a way to remove the original text directly from the pdf.
Is it possible at all? And if so, how?
please advise
thanks
