Re: slowing down
'Spyware Doctor' (SD) pretty much duplicates much of what 'WINDOWS DEFENDER' (WD) does but SD is much more substantial in its coverage. If SD is running real-time (always on in the background) this can be a quit a resource intensive application especially on a laptop. In contrast, WD is hardly noticeable. If applicable, you really don't want to be running both at the same time as background processes (always checking apps).
I stopped running SD in real-time since I was rarely seeing any malware to justify the performance hit on my wife's laptop (especially annoying in startup and shutdown). But, I still use it once a week as an on-demand (after-the-fact) scan. Likewise, I don't find Ad-Aware particularly necessary or productive especially with a tool like SD in use (some avoidable startup overhead).
