Re: Desktop

Yo roky, guess what? I got the free Ubuntu CD today! Haven't tried it out yet but WOOO! Haha.

Maybe I should state the things I'm using?

Windows XP SP2
Stardock ObjectDock with CarbonGloss and CarbonPLUS icon set from DA
Stardock Windowblinds 6 with Royale Vista 2 theme from DA
Ubuntu icon set with the old version of IconPackager
CursorFX with "Sexy" theme from DA

I generally like wide spaces for my desktop, so my taskbar is hidden (launchy does most of the app-launching) and quicklaunch is replaced with the right side ObjectDock. The bottom ObjectDock is to show the programs currently running. To keep desktop clutter minimum, I've a folder called "Desktop" and in it is most of my shortcuts and documents that I access often. Another "My documents" of sorts.

I've also installed Vista Theme Pack 8.1 so that also changes the look, but I don't think it's apparent from the desktop.

Re: Desktop

Yo Roky! I just installed Ubuntu and am using it to view this page now! Lol! Quite cool!

I've only partitioned it with about 27 Gigabytes though. Mainly want to use it to test out Ubuntu and see how it runs. I'm still quite clumsy with it especially because the shortcuts are different and Ubuntu's just VERY different. Any links you can recommend? Does Compiz Fusion require Compiz?

Re: Desktop

My thread on Help for Linux users is packed with Links. Yeah you will need Compiz, which should be in your Add/Remove section, or you can get it through Synaptic package manager. You can get Wine from both those sections also. I am going to give ya a screen shot of what software Libraries/Sources I have enabled to get the most out of Ubuntu.
Attachment 1785

On the software sources page when it first opens up be sure all the boxes are checked except for source code. Because of legal issues I guess I am not able to post a screen shot of this.

Attachment 1787

Attachment 1788

After you do all this , you will be informed your updates, etcc... are out of date and then press the reload button. After a while when its done close out everything and click on the new Yellow or Red update icon on top right taskbar and you are going to get a tion of new software. After that you can use the search button in Synaptic after you open it and search for Wine, Compiz, Flashplayer, Vlc, Xine, etc..

In my help for Linux thread I think I posted a how to Link for the perfect Ubuntu Desktop that will walk you through with screenshots and everything. Have fun Kaister, You are about to get your feet wet this fall.

Re: Desktop

I'll slowly trawl through your posts when I get my Ubuntu repaired (which will be thanks to you as well I believe hehe). I've one question though, how come I can only run one instance of update/install at one time? It keeps saying Synaptic is running or something. It's just a little... Annoying? Is there any way around it?

the whole terminal sudo apt thing is scary too. Lol. no idea what is what.

Re: Desktop

I don't know what you mean. You can't have terminal open downloading updates, and synaptic open at the same time. Same with Add/Remove and Synaptic at the same time. Only when downloading packages/updates can 1 of those applications/programs be open at one time. They are all interlinked so when you run something like Synaptic, you need to close Add/Remove or Vise-Versa. Same thing when you click on that Yellow or Red icon on the top r/h of taskbar. You need to close terminal if its running. You need to close Synaptic if it is running. You need to close Add/Remove if it is running. When I say running, I mean when you click on the updater icon on the top r/h taskbar. Hope that explains a little about what you may be confused about. And if you read some of my Linux posts, you will see how I mention that any Windows knowledge you may have is not applicable in Linux, cuz Linux aint Windows.

Re: Desktop

Oh, and Terminal is in Applications>Accessories>Terminal. Think of it as DOS with Superman powers in Linux. A lot of experienced users use nothing but Command line Interface to run their Linux computers. Don't be too afeared of it. I use it a bit myself.
