When i open Windows Task Manager and click on Networking, at the bottom it says Local Area Connection, next to that is Network Utilization(usually 0.04, 0.01, 0.02 %) then it's Link Speed which is 12Mbps. i want to know what this means? does that mean i can download files at 12mb/sec(i've never seem it happen by the way) ? also i want to know, if possible, what is the fastes i can download/upload files? i tred looking it up by myself but still cant get it.thx

Do you mean download off the internet or get files off another computer that you are networked to? Are you on a network?

Re: Link Speed

The speed you can up and download files depends upon the speed of your internet connection. For instance I am on a 2mb connection. You should have documentation from your ISP telling you what speed connection you have. It doesn't sound as if you are on a network. Being on a network means that your computer is connected to another or more than one so that you can share files and the internet connection.

Re: Link Speed

First, 12 Mbps is 12 megabits per second, and thats your transfer speed from the modem to the computer, not necessarily from modem to the internet.

Second, MBps is MegaBYTEs per second, the other, Mbps is megaBITs per second

Third, like MBps vs Mbps, KBps is KiloBYTEs per second vs. KiloBITs per second.

Bytes vs. Bits is a factor of 10 different (A byte is 8 bits, but you have Start and stop bits in a standard 8,N,1 transfer protocol. This means 8 data bits, No Parity, 1 stop bit, always 1 start bit, so 10 bits to each transfer word or byte)

Re: Link Speed

i probably got you comfused but i was downloading (off the internet) a file and it was 282.33 MB, going at a speed of 615 KB/sec, in size and it said it was going to take about 5 minutes. i dont understand, which one is bigger mb or MB? What would be the size of 12 mb if converted to MB's?

Re: Link Speed

Ok, 1 MB is 1024 KB, os a 283 MB file running at 615 KB/s would be 3 to 5 minutes depending on download speed changes. If you see MB vs Mb, the MB is larger, MegaByte(8 bits) versus Megabit (1 bit)

12Mb converted to MB, would be 1.4 MB
