I don't go back quite so far as Sputnik, but 40 years ago colour TV was still a dream for Australia. And long-distance phone calls had to be connected by an operator. Long-distance, by the way, meant 30 miles or more.
As for computers in the home - we'd all have flying cars before that ever happened!
