Question The smoking ban in the UK

For those who are not aware the UK has had a smoking Ban in place since last year. The ban prevents anyone lighting up in any enclosed place such as a shopping mall, pub, retaurant, company car etc

Have any more countries adopted this ban? are there any States in the US which have? What do you guys in the UK think of the ban here.... do you support it?

Re: The smoking ban in the UK

I think a lot of smokers would agree as well though. People obviously enjoy a cigarette but I am sure a lot of those people prefer not to inhale everyone elses smoke as well.

Re: The smoking ban in the UK

In the US it varies from state to state but most have bans in public enclosed places.

Some have gone as far as any rental space (flats) or any home that is not independent unto itself (condos etc.). Most hotel rooms; B&B's; are also smoke free.

Re: The smoking ban in the UK

I live in the state of Florida (USA) and smoking has been ban in public enclosed places for about 4 years, this includes bars, & restraunts.

I am not a smoker; I agree that smoking should be ban in public & goverment facilities, however I also believe the owner of a private business should be free to make the call as to allow or dis-allow smoking in their establishment.
If a private business owner wants to allow smoking they should be FREE to do so as long as it is clearly posted at the door. If a customer has a problem with this policy then they are also FREE to go else where.

What about the employees though of that business? They are then forced to breath the smoke as it's there place of work and it's not as flexible as to whether they choose to visit that place or not.

Again I do not totally disagree.... If the employee is aware of the situation prior to hiring, than they have no room to complain. If on the other hand the policy is implemented after the fact, then this would be an issue for management & the employee to settle. Not everyone is concerned or bothered by second hand smoke.

It seems to me that as adults we should be able to respect each others rights and reach some sort of compromise. As in everything there are pros & cons.

Re: The smoking ban in the UK

In Australia it is banned in pubs, clubs, motels, workplaces and outdoors within 3 metres of a doorway. Most of the pubs now have a beer garden outside which allows smoking. Planes banned it years ago and some states now have banned it in cars carrying children under the age of 18. Advertising is banned, including sporting events and the displays of packets that the public see in a shop is limited and mostly covered over.

Re: The smoking ban in the UK

In the UK the smoking ban was meant to start last year but the part that i live in people still smoke everywhere even when they are not meant to. I thought that people were not meant to smoke in pubs but they have got a smoking corner still. In hospitals they provide smoking area's but i thought if you were in hospital you would not be able to smoke.
