Aol Web Page Errors

One of the Pc's on our network has AOL installed. When the user goes to look at any web page on AOL (using aol browser) all that is displayed is a * in the upper left hand corner of a blank white screen. This occurs only when using broadband thru our network. It does not happen thru dial up. Has anyone had a problem like this and if so is there a fix.

Windows 2000
AOL 9.0

Re: Aol Web Page Errors

When one of my directors had problems with the Internet on her company laptop, I discovered that she had installed AOL to use it at home. I removed AOL (well, as much as anyone can) and pretty much all of her problems were sorted!

Why does a PC on your network need AOL on it for business use? Don't they all feed off of the server's Internet connection?

Re: Aol Web Page Errors

When the boss wants AOL. The boss gets AOL.

I am now getting an http error 400 which has something to do with not having permission to view the page - but I have yet to figure that one out. It didn't always have the problem but I am not sure what changed to create it. It happens on multiple PC's and multiple versions of AOL which leads me to believe it is a network problem but I am not sure where the fix is.

Oh dear, I thought that might be your answer!

Try logging into a Hotmail account or other secure page such as online banking, etc. Do you get a similar problem?

If so, you might find that it's down to the Internet Explorer (or AOL equivalent) settings.

When I've had similar IE problems with secure pages at work not going through my proxy server properly, I've fixed it by going to:

Tools > Internet Options > Advanced

and switching on 'Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections' and all the available protocols that IE isn't set to use by default.

Alternatively, if your server has a firewall, you might find that it's set to block certain sites or certain protocols.

Re: Aol Web Page Errors

Thank you for your reply unfortunately the problem remains. I changed the IE settings that are in AOL.If I am lucky some day she might just drop AOL and save a lot of headaches. If need be she can use dial up or check email via the web.

Re: Aol Web Page Errors

Just as a quick test, would it be possible to plug a PC running AOL into the 'dirty' side of the firewall, thereby byassing any network blocking?

If it STILL doesn't work, then you know it's not a firewall problem.

Re: Aol Web Page Errors

If I connect to our hub behind the router but do not connect the PC to the domain I can get out on the internet and aol works fine which leads me to believe the problem is on the server. I have found a couple other forums on the internet where there were problems similar to this but no one ever had an answer.
