Installer
I have a problem with the spell checker in word - "spell checker missing".
So, tried to Detect and Repair, and it started looking for the Installer (which I take to mean the XP installer), and then stopped with the message that I was either in Safe Mode (which I wasn't) or Installer not installed correctly.
Then tried to re-install Office 2000, and same problem with Installer.
How do I cure this.
Regards,
Rannoch

Re: Installer
Do you have the latest updates from Windows Updates?
There was a new version Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1
Update for Windows XP (KB898461)
released a few months ago.
Here are some other ideas:
Quote:
Unregister, and then re-register Windows Installer. This procedure corrects most
situations, and does not affect any currently-installed program that uses the
Windows Installer.
To unregister and re-register Windows Installer:
Click Start, and then click Run.
Type in the Open box: msiexec /unregister and then click OK.
Click Start, and then click Run.
Type in the Open box: msiexec /regserver click OK.
Type commands exactly, including the space between c and /.
This will not affect programs which use Windows Installer that are already
installed.
or
Windows Installer error
Go to Start/Run and type: regsvr32 msi.dll
then
Go to Start/Run and type
SFC /SCANNOW
Make sure you have your WinXP CD in the CD Drive before executing the SFC
command.

Re: Installer
Thanks Jephree,
I'll carry out your instructions tonight.
The problem was in two parts - the first was the Installer, and the second (which was the reason for using the installer) was missing spell checker when using Word.
Problem here is that you can type any gobbledy gook and it accepts it. If I run the spellchecker I get message that the grammer and speller DLLs are missing, and it carries on as normal (ignoring spelling errors).
What I tried to do was run the Detect and Repair in Word, and got the Installer problem.
When I get the Installer issue fixed will any harm be done to any Office data files if I just re-install Office 2000. I assume the re-install would fix the Spell Checker problem
Thanks,
Rannoch

Re: Installer & Spell Checker
This problem is in two parts ...
Installer not working
I've tried all the suggested routes, and it's still not working (when I try to Detect & Repair) in Word, I get the same message "running in safe mode of installer not installed correctly".
If I'm in Word and try to run spell checker I get the following message MSSpell3.dll and mssp232.dll missing.
I did a search and MSSpell3.dll was in
c:\program files\common files\microsoft shares\proof.
The other I couldn't find.
The system is XP Pro with the SP2 upgrade (April). Can't repair XP as the CD is XP SP1 and says it an older version
Looks like I'm stuffed.

Re: Installer
As the system I have is in constant use, I can't aford to zap it and re-build.
I wiondered if the following method would work.
Install a second XP system (XP Home), and add the main software being used. Point the softare at the data area (separate partition).
Therefore gradually more to the new partition.
Then zap the first partition so that on boot the system will boot to the new clean XP Home system
Comments.
Getting desperate.

You can uninstall SP2 via Add/Remove programs.
If you have any problem there then:

Also for the future you can create an XP SP2 CD by slipstreaming.
