Excel converting to a Winzip file when emailed

Hi,

When emailing various people (internal and external) an Excel attachment, the message is sent but the attachment won't open and it not received as a .xls file but a .zip file that won't open (regardless of whether the PC has Winzip software).

Has this happened to anybody, has anyone any ideas on how to resolve?

Thanks

Re: Excel converting to a Winzip file when emailed

I've never heard of this happening before. The only reason for this that I could think of would be that you have sent the file by right-clicking it in Windows Explorer or My Computer and used Winzip's right-click option for Zip And Email. Or, perhaps, you have Winzip Outlook Companion installed and that has automatically zipped the XLS file without you telling it to?

Files compressed by Winzip using its highest compression level can only be opened by Winzip 9 or 10. This is an extract from the Winzip 10.0 help file:

Note: "Maximum (enhanced deflate)" was introduced in WinZip® 9.0. "Maximum (bzip2)" and "Maximum (PPMd)" were introduced in WinZip 10.0. These methods provide greater compression for many files, but prior WinZip versions will not be able to extract files compressed with these methods. "Maximum (enhanced deflate)" compression requires WinZip version 8.1 or later to extract files, "Maximum (bzip2)" compression requires WinZip 9.0 or later to extract files, and "Maximum (PPMd)" compression requires WinZip 10.0 or later to extract files. These compression methods also may not be compatible with some other Zip file utilities.
