Question Dell Dimension 2400 USB

I installed a Dell Dimension 2400 motherboard on another case and installed all the drivers, but when I plug in a USB device, Windows freezes. Someone gave me this motherboard so I don't know many of the specs. Can anyone help?

Re: Dell Dimension 2400 USB

On the Dell site, I've searched for the Dimension 2400 and I believe this is the correct machine.

Downloading the Chipset drivers should probably rectify the problem.

Re: Dell Dimension 2400 USB

I have downloaded the chipset drivers, and they did not solve the problem.

Re: Dell Dimension 2400 USB

That wasn't the solution to my problem either. Windows just halts when a device is inserted.

Here are some numbers I found on the mobo. Don't see a signifigance personally, but maybe there really is.

Re: Dell Dimension 2400 USB

Just to note:

In general Dell motherboards require Dell PSUs.

Do not know if the PSU is Dell or whether or not this is the issue but it could be.

Actually if it is not a Dell PSU I am surprised it works at all.

You can also check all the USB options in the BIOS Setup.

Re: Dell Dimension 2400 USB

It is not a Dell PSU. Everything works fine except the USB. There are 2 motherboard connectors: The main ATX and a 4 pin other thing, which my PSU has a plug for. The PSU is a Bestec. Does anyone have any other possible ideas? I installed a fresh Windows XP Pro and I installed the drivers from the Dell website.

Re: Dell Dimension 2400 USB

Did you check the BIOS settings?

Again Dell specifies only using Dell PSU's and this might be the issue.

Quote:
The power supply that came with your Dell computer, manufactured since September of 1998, may look like a standard ATX power supply. A standard ATX power supply will even physically fit into the Dell computer and the electrical components will look like they line up, however, if you don't use a proprietary Dell power supply or a Dell to ATX Power Supply Converter with your standard ATX power supply, your computer will not work and damage may occur to the motherboard and/or the standard power supply.

Re: Dell Dimension 2400 USB

There aren't any BIOS settings except for USB Emulation and Enabled. If I disable enabled, USB doesn't do anything, not even power. I have no idea what USB Emulation is. Also, the only USB device I have tried is a flash drive and it works on other computers. I do not have the extra plug as shown in the picture. Interesting though, why Dell does this. Everything else has worked fine and there has been no other problems as of now.
