Help with SiS Graphics Driver please

Having a few issues with my laptop's screen (occasionally blacking out, receiving an error message), I decided to update the graphics driver.

The current driver is v 2.22, so I downloaded the latest driver (SiS UniVGA3 Graphics Driver v 3.73) from Welcome to Silicon Integrated Systems Corp..

1. Upon opening Setup, I was asked if I wanted to remove the old driver (recommended), I said yes, then shortly thereafter, I receive the following message:

"RUN DLL
error in sisinst.dll missing entry: uninstall"

2. So then I tried installing the new driver and choosing to not remove the old driver during Setup. This seemed to work. The new driver was installed, the monitor was working fine, and the System Properties all registered that the new driver was active. However, I still wanted to go in to remove the old driver, so...

2. I went to Add/Remove Programs and uninstalled the old driver. Unfortunately, it did not uninstall just the old driver: it also removed the new driver (sigh). So then...

3. I had no graphics driver whatsoever, which is fine, I thought. I can just reinstall the new driver. I tried that and I am now getting this message:

InstFunc.dll
UpdateDriverForPlugandPlayDevices: Error

I am not sure what to do now. I could system restore to the point when both drivers were on the system. That seemed to be working fine. Any help would be appreciated!

Details:
Graphics card is SiS 650_651_M650_M652_740
Dell Inspiron 1000 with Windows XP SP3

Thank you for your time...

Re: Help with SiS Graphics Driver please

Hi ,

Yes , a system restore sounds a good idea - it's safe to run a machine with seperate drivers as long as they are for the same card , this allows for the " rollback " feature in device manager . Installation of any program or driver that creates conflict or errors should always be addressed primarily with a system restore .
