Briefly explain what is not working for you and what you were doing when the issue occurred. Have you made any recent changes to your machine? Tell us any error messages displayed.

In the topic description guide us to your problem, don't say "Help I am desperate" which tells us nothing. Give us an example 'Software Problem' for example. Also tell us what you have done to try and fix your problem.

Sometimes in the last 2 months my Windows XP Sound Scheme became "diminished".

All my pre-set PC sounds disappeared and the choice of categories shrunk down to 18 (from about 30 - 40 before).
Now I don't have any way to receive a "sound" when I get email, someone gets online, etc., etc.

Please advise how to restore the XP Sound Scheme to its original functionality.

I have just been given a Dell Poweredge SC1420. in which the previous owner had changed the sound card to a unimodem half-duplex audio device. but i have no sound. the system says that the Device is Working Properly but when i check the audio properties under the volumn tab it says No Audio Device. When i Select the sounds tab and try to play a program event (default beep) i get an error message "indows ....... your sound card may be in use" and under the audio tab it lists the sound playback default device as Modem 0 line playback.

(paraphrased) "Windows could not load one of the files from your registry. A copy has been loaded from a log successfully."

When I look into the Event Viewer, I found the following message under the Application window as a warning:

"Windows saved user COMPUTER\ericator registry while an application or service was
still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not
been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services
to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account."

I also found this:

"Windows cannot unload your classes registry file - it is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded when it is no longer in use."

I checked the Services control panel and none of the services are set to login as a User. I know this is not the only problem with this computer, and I may even have a hard drive that's ready to die, bad memory, or a faulty motherboard, since I keep getting a "The Volume Is Dirty" during a disk check. But I do feel like this is the starting point.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm getting really tired of this thing dying on me in the middle of my work.
