Question Just wondering

NEED TO KNOW!!! I want to put 2 computers on one Internet connection. My connection is Cable (rogers, Canadian). I was wondering... I have two cable modems and i want to know if a run cable in the other room and hook up my other modem if that would get internet on that computer or not. ALSO-- I want to know (if the above won't work) the Cheapest way to run internet to my other computer... I looked at wireless routers... and they are $80, and the Card for the computer is $110. That IS $190!. Ethernet Cable for 100' is about $30. I was wondering what would be the best way to do it.

AND-- I want to know if i can plug in my Rogers modem into any outlet... or if it has to be the one the technician put in.

Thnx for the help --Puter--

Re: Just wondering

If it is a cable connection you have, then the connection would best work from the terminal that the technician installed.

As for your sharing, how far away are teh two machines. If your talking distances of say, 25 - 50 metres, then a wireless G router and wireless cards are less messy and easier to hook up. The router and cards would probably come with some quick install software that will have you up and running in no time flat.

If however, we're talking decent distances, say 75-100 metres or more, and you are not afraid to drill through a couple of walls, then CAT5 ethernet cabling and a simple switch would be the way to go and be considerably cheaper (unless you damage the house that is).

The second option of cabling is more difficult to set up though, and may involve some manual entry of Ip addresses etc.
