Using laptop on work LAN

Ive just installed Windows XP Pro onto a Laptop, and want to use my work's LAN to download and install the xp updates. Ive put the network cable in, and it seems connected (I can show this by taking the cable out and the 'network cable is unplugged' balloon pops up). The properties of the LAN also show that im connected at 100mbps.

However, when I run IE or try to do the updates, I keep getting 'page cannot be displayed'. Ive checked the Connection tab of Internet Options, and think I have to concern myself with the LAN settings. This is where Im lost - what should i be changing here, if anything?? I have left it at 'automatically detect settings', but this doesnt seem to help.

Re: Using laptop on work LAN

On the Connections Tab | Dial-up ... | Settings...
Unclick Automatically detect settings
Unclick Use automatic configuration script
Unclick Use a proxy server ...

If the above doesn't work then:
Under LAN Settings unclick everything.

Close IE & reopen after changes.

Also: When you try Windows Updates do you get the page not found or some other error?

Re: Using laptop on work LAN

If I go Internet Options>Connection, there are no connections under 'Dial-up and VPN....' for me to check the settings for.
I checked the LAN settings and unclicked all the options (well, I only had to unclick 'auto detect....'), closed and re-opened IE but still 'page cannot be displayed'.
The same error occurs when trying to go to the updates page too.

not sure if this is related - I just did an ipconfig command and all IP's are listed at 0.0.0.0 **reboot fixed this - an IP is now showing, but still wont connected to internet**

Re: Using laptop on work LAN

Look in the Device Manager:

Start/Run/ devmgmt.msc

Any Yellow "!" & or Other Devices?

Re: Using laptop on work LAN

Device manager shows all deviced as being OK. The ethernet card is installed and reported to be working correctly.

When I click on the properties of the LAN connection, the following is displayed:

Address type - Automatic Private Address
IP Address 169.254.32.116
Subnet Mask 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway **blank**

This info is also shown in the ipconfig list.

There are lots of other pc's in my room, so could i use info from them to try and connect manually?? (not that I'd know what to do lol)

thanks for your help jephree

Re: Using laptop on work LAN

I am not much up on networking but I can share my searching with you:

You can ONLY have ONE default gateway - ie: The route to get to the internet. This should ONLY be in ONE network card - your internet facing NIC.

set the external gateway manually and leave the internal NIC gateway blank this is a recommended setup

Hope this helps some ...
