NTL & Wireless networks

I have decided to set up a home wireless network and am getting nowhere fast. I have puchased a linksys wireless g router which allows me to configure it to a point but wll not recognise the presence of my NTL modem which means no internet through the router.

The router has a light to show when it is connected to the internet but it stays off when connected to the modem though it lights when I connect the wan port to the PC (I know this isn't correct but I was getting desperate)

Any clues would be a great help
