Wireless works, ethernet doesn't. Help!

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help with this problem:

1. My Netgear wireless router works fine when I connect to it wirelessly. But, oddly, as soon as I plug in an ethernet cable, it loses the ADSL signal and claims to be no longer connnected to the internet (the "connected" light on the front panel goes out). If I unplug the ethernet cable again it works fine!

2. The odd thing is, and I suspect this problem may be related, if I plug the router straight into the telephone socket using just the supplied standard modem cable it wont connect to the internet, yet, if I plug it into the telephone phone socket using the modem cable and a long a telephone extension cable, it works fine.

I'm running ADSL from BT. The telephone point I'm connecting the router to is a BT master socket wired directly to the BT cable coming out of the ground. The router is pretty new and has been running fine up to now.

I suspect my wiring may be the problem but any help appreciated.

R
