AOL are a nightmare if you want anything other than their restricted environment that they permit you to work in. Under 'Network and dial-up connections', do you have an entry listed for the AOL "network" connection? I think that this would have been created when you originally ran AOL's installation software to work with their supplied modem.

It shows as local area network. it seems that the aol software just doesn't allow the use of this modem? when i set up a new location and add modem on aol it can't find the belkin one via the ethernet card. i've got £'s of dsl modem and router that's no use!!!

Re: adsl modem and aol

The 'local area network' connection could be a default wired connection for an RJ45 network port in the PC/laptop. Do you not have another 'wireless connection' connection showing under Network And Dial-Up Connections?

The PC/laptop not seeing the modem is to be expected - the PC/laptop isn't plugged into the modem. It's plugged into the router. Can you ping the router?

(PING: send a communication request to a network device. To use the PING command, go to the command prompt and type ping followed by the IP address of the router).
