Question Apps don't see connection

Running XP Pro, SP2.

I made a 'new' connection, a dial-up modem type. The sequence Start->ConnectTo works just fine, all the right noises are emitted, the connection icon is blinking, and I get a pop up telling me the connection is up and running.

HOWEVER... neither my email program nor my browser "see" this connection, both fail at their duties and come back with messages that are not encouraging. For example the email throws an Alert!: "Failed to connect to server mail.isp.com". The connection icon shows no activity, no attempt is made through this connection.
Browser: Mozilla
Email: Mozilla
... though the same symptoms occur with IE and OUTLOOK.

Somewhere I need to toggle something. Ideas???

Alexander

Re: Apps don't see connection

Is this a new problem? Were things working OK previously? Any new hardware and or software?

Did you input the proper ISP info?

Have you contacted your ISP to verify your settings?

Re: Apps don't see connection

Let's be clear on this... the connection to the ISP is made, done, good. I use the same exact settings as on the laptop that is usually one foot away (but not networked.)
The machine in question was once part of a home ETHERNET network, then for some Micor$oft reason had a huge crash. I had some medical issues and had to let it be for many months. Now I finally re-installed the XP PRO but can't get this 'usually trivial' connection going.

Any new software? Yup, I'd say so... the entire OS !! :-)

Re: Apps don't see connection

Have you tried turning off the firewall program and attempting to connect then? turn off the firewall completely, then restart and attempt the connection. Also, uninstall any MacAffee or Norton programs which were installed when you reloaded XP. Don't turn them off, .. uninstall them.

Re: Apps don't see connection

The firewall settings make no difference.

But removing the NORTON stuff?? BINGO. I am writing this message from the computer in question, it now 'sees' the dial-up connection. Did NORTON seize it somehow, for example for an update?

At any rate.... a million thanks to you, Glenn. Now the laptop can go get a well-earned rest. :-) And so can I.

Re: Apps don't see connection

To be honest I'm not sure what the deal is with the Norton stuff. I have worked in several companies and with many home offices, and anytime there is a Norton installation with a connection problem, I uninstall Norton and the problem goes away. Again, I don't know why and haven't spent any time on it to find out if it is a setting or something that needs to be changed. There are better programs out there, and I'm sure that you'll probably spend just as much time as I normally do in figuring out 'why' now that your computer is working :-)

Glad to be of service... happy computing

Glenn
