Question networking

I would like to set up a simple network between 2 computers sitting beside one another - can anyone help? Cheapest and simplest please. I'm a seasoned PC user but have never attempted networking before. Both computers run XP.
Thanks from Isobel

Re: networking

you could network them together using a crossover cable

do you want them both to use the internet at the same time?

how are you connected to the internet at the moment, USB or Ethernet cable?

Re: networking

Thanks for yur quick reply. Connected by USB Voyager modem. Not really a priority to have both P.C's connected. Can you explain re: crossover cable - if I'm going to buy one I like to know exactly what to ask for (maybe in our local Maplins store?)
Appreciate your help
Isobel

Re: networking

Hi there,

I can provide you with an ethernet crossover cable. I think that we have them in stock in 5m or 10m lengths. In fact, we did have some listed on the D-A-L Trader auction site here until recently. Our delivered price will be cheaper than the Maplins shop price.

A crossover cable is like a standard ethernet (RJ45) network cable, except that the internal wiring is twisted around so that the signal works correctly when you connect one PC to another via the network cards in the PCs .... without having a router or network switch in between them.

In theory, a crossover cable is the simplest and cheapest way to network 2 PCs together (as Brain_Damage said) as all that it is is one cable - no external boxes to link up. Windows XP's built-in Network Setup Wizard should take care of it all for you.

Re: networking

Hi Isobel.s,

Sorry we haven't got back to you sooner - we've been trying to get an auction listing for this item up on the D-A-L Trader site so that you can buy it online ... but there are currently some issues with the auction area since the D-A-L.com site had a major server upgrade last week.

The price for a new crossover cable (in stock) would be £4.99 + VAT for 5 metres (16 feet) or £7.99 + VAT for 10 metres (32 feet). Delivery is £2.99 + VAT for either one for Royal Mail First Class (we can send it by City Link courier as well but that's rather expensive). So that's £9.38 or £12.90 in total depending on which length you need.

I shall send you a Private Message with our contact details.

Thanks.
