Dial-Up Network

Is it possible to connect two computers together like a network using only dial-up modems? I'm trying to link my old computer to access data and transfer it to my new notebook PC. Also, free software is better.

The only way that this can be done is to have the desktop PC dialed out to the Internet on one phone line and the laptop dialed out on another phone line and then use remote control / file transfer software between the two. Far too complicated.

If they both have USB ports, I'd recommend getting a file transfer cable or, even better, get a USB key or USB hard drive to put the data onto. Then copy it back off onto the laptop.

Alternatively, recording the data onto CD or other removeable disk may be an option available to you.
