netgear router connects but no internet

Hi - I have a problem with a friend's computer. He has a new Netgear DG834G router that works fine on my computer. On his machine, running win xp the router says it is connected but internet will not work. When you go to any web page it just says page not found. I did the following:
In CMD ran ipconfig/release, ipconfig/flushdns, ipconfig/renew. I then tried to ping news.google.com - did not work

If I did a ping of 74.125.19.104 it opened the Google website. Have DNS set for automatic from ISP, but on this machine cannot find websites if I type in their name. As I said, if I use the router on my machine on the same phone line then everything works OK.

Is it possible that a virus has messed up something with the DNS settings in the registry. Please help.

Re: netgear router connects but no internet

First eleminate any chance of it being some router settings by manually resetting it.
Stick a pen in the little black button for 30 seconds.

This will restore factory defaults. When done re-configure the interned settings on it.

If your problem persists, you can be sure the problem is local to the PC and not the router.

In this case, try reinstalling the network from scratch using the network setup wizard.
You could also make sure you have the needed protocols and services installed for the network.
