Internet dies every 10-20 minutes

Hey guys.

For about a month now, my internet just keeps dying randomly. I have to reset my router and my modem to get it working again.

I have a SB5101E Surfboard Modem and a WRT56GS Linksys Router.

On my Modem, all the lights are static, while the PC light keeps flickering. This is usually a good sign. But when the internet dies, the PC light just stays static.

On the Router, the Power, WLAN and 3 light are Static, and the Internet light keeps flickering. When the internet dies, the Internet light just stays static,

And by Static, I mean it just stays lit.

Anything I can do about this? I'd call them but it's 05:16 and they'd probably tell me there is an interference in the area.

Thanks

Byaa

Re: Internet dies every 10-20 minutes

When it happens, can you ping your router? Are Ethernet connected computers also thrown out? We must remember that even though the WRT56GS is called a router, it is really three (mostly) independent network "appliances" in one box: router, wireless access point (WAP), and a 4-port Ethernet 10/100 switch. Internally, the WAP is connected to the router, just as another switch, computer, or a print server might be.

So, the first thing you need to do is determine if your "gateway" (the modem) is the problem, or your router. So you need to connect a computer via Ethernet and see if Internet access is gone from there too.

For the record, I have two broken Motorola SB5101 modems sitting here in a junk pile - some do go bad.

It's connected directly. So far, no problems. If there is a problem, i'll switch cables and still have it connected directly to the modem.

Sorry for Double Post. I needed to write an update and I don't know if some of you guys read it and was waiting for my update and wouldn't read this if I didn't update it.

It's connected directly to the modem now. And the internet still went off.

Re: Internet dies every 10-20 minutes

I had this problem once. It might not be relevant to yours though. After making sure it wasn't a bad cable and after switching out modems, ( I have a spare) I contacted Windstream, my ISP, and informed them I was dropping connection after a few minutes. After their tech came over and found my lines were not at fault, The problem was found to be at the main switching area at Windstream in the town I live in. It was fixed in about 10 hours after initial service call. Can't say that that might be your problem, just figured I would give my experience of the same problem.

I've noticed that it lasts longer when I connect it directly.

Re: Internet dies every 10-20 minutes

Well, the next step is to isolate the this down more, and connect a computer directly to the gateway - which will require resetting the IP for that computer to that assigned by the gateway. So you would need to power everything down and back up again - assuming automatic IP assignment (DHCP). This is often a PITA, but is also something the ISP tech support would likely have you do anyway.

While there a chance it could still be your router, it is pointing more and more to the gateway and beyond. I agree with rok and think you should contact your ISP and tell them you have eliminated everything but the modem and don't want to replace it without them checking their end first. "Reauthorizing" your gateway, telling the system it is a different device for your account, forces the system to, hopefully, reset whatever was not right.

Update:

Wow. It hasn't happened for some time now. I went on:

http://192.168.100.1

And went on Config and changed the freq. to 0 and clicked on save changes and restarted my modem. It hasn't happened since.

Re: Internet dies every 10-20 minutes

That's an interesting link - I thought at first you entered it wrong and it should have been 1.100 but I see not. I will have to check it out.

Did you mean frequency? Or Channel ID?
