Laptop unable to connect!
So i have a fairly new laptop running vista and i can seem to connect to the net;
anyway here is the situation and bit of info on the whole thing
ISP - iinet
Modem - Belkin, F1PI210ENau
Router - ASUS, WL-520GC
Connection type - Wireless
Encryption - None
Computer with the issue - Vista home
Other computers on the network - vista home, xp home
internet browser - ie latest
symptoms - says connected to the internet when i view the network sharing in control pannel.
try openinng ie but no connection
it says it recieves/sends data
i have tried using an ethernet cable directly through the modem and router yet same avail.
there is no encryption on the router.
all the other computers on the network function normally.

Re: Laptop unable to connect!
Hi ,
I had the same problem with my laptop - i firstly installed 20mb broadband on a "G" wireless network hub . Just running the installation disc allowed full connectivity . I found that at times running a repair on the actual wireless adapter sorted the problem . When I networked my laptop to my main pc on a named private network the wireless connection showed but I had the same problems as you describe .
Firstly most connectivity issues can be resolved by flushing the DNS cache with the Command Prompt :
Vista DNS Cache: Flush, Clear, or Reset | Microsoft Vista | Tech-Recipes
Secondly try setting a new seperate network specific to the laptop - all router settings can be found and set / reset on the ip address
192.168.1.1
Firewall settings can also prevent connection on a network - make sure you have your full ip range open in the exceptions - vista's firewall allows wireless networking pretty much automatically but I've had problems with zonealarm and eset .
I personally don't use my laptop much on the internet after purchasing a better spec tower system and 50mb connection . Wireless networks run on either "G" or "N" routers , G is for the slower connection N for the faster , also the coverage is better with stronger wireless signal on "N" series routers . My laptop used to connect with a full signal strength on the G network and i could easily make almost full use of the 20mb avaliable but just simply moving into my bedroom where I mainly use my laptop if I can't be bothered to get out of bed and have things to do I'd lose signal completely . Interference to a wireless signal can be caused by many things , heating pipes , cables , etc .
Another solution is to buy a set of wireless plugs - these plug into a socket , ethernet connect to your router and then similarly to your laptop . I got a set from ebay for £10 and they give full capacity connection and run as if they were on original LAN and cut the need to use wireless adapters completely .

Re: Laptop unable to connect!
Have you tried another browser? Have you even been able to connect to the internet? What service pack do you have? When you open up "network and sharing center" [from the control panel] in the pane on the left hand side there is a link that says "diagnose and repair" have you tried that?

For best results please:
1) State your OS(s), any software involved in your problem, & any major updates (i.e. service pack, version, edition, service release, roll up, beta release, distribution [Linux], etc.) to your OS/software as applicable to your problem.
2) For hardware issues also provide your system information: RAM, processor, etc. in addition to your OS.
3) If you have more than one OS on your computer, how does your problem relate to your other OS(s)? This is especially important for hardware issues.
4) Provide as much detail as possible, being specific as even the most minute detail could help others help you solve the problem. Please tell us what you have tried. Please tell us the make/model of your computer.
5) Respond with the result(s) of the suggestion(s) from the other users to provide feedback, even if this only means saying "this worked!"
If you don't know your system information please consider running our hardware scan and post or PM me your link.

I'm able to view and transfer files between the shared network but unable to access the router or the modem, any ideas?

Re: Laptop unable to connect!
Browse to Command Prompt under accessories, right click and select Run As Administrator. Type in the following one at a time in order:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Re: Laptop unable to connect!
Also right click on computer --> properties --> device manager. Click on the "View" menu and select "show hidden devices". Under the network adapters look to see if any of them looks unusual. Double click on the entries for your wireless and ethernet adapters and post back on the device status.

Re: Laptop unable to connect!
I can see, the connection is there (ping is fine), so there is no reason to play with connection settings anymore.
What browser beside IE, did you try?
What are your security programs?
The laptop is new, so have you been able to get any connection ever?
