Blank screen with new cpu.

I have a Biostar P4VTB mobo and have just bought a new Pentium 4 800Mhz FSB 3.2Ghz 1MB L2-cache processor. My mobo should support this processor, but when installed everything sounded right but nothing comes up on my screen. Am I missing something? I have a hyper-threading processor, my mobo supports that aswell. Im fairly lost myself, my old Celeron 2.4Ghz 400Mhz FSB still works in it, but my new one should.

Thanks very much to anyone who can help.

Re: Blank screen with new cpu.

Do you literally see nothing at all on the screen?

Is the internal system speaker properly connected to the motherboard - do you hear any beeps when you switch it on? The beep code (made up of long beeps and short beeps) is a diagnostics code that might point us in the right direction of the problem.

In fact, do you hear anything at all? Is the fan on the processor spinning up? Any noise from the hard drive?

Re: Blank screen with new cpu.

Thanks for the reply.
There is one hell of a bleeping. Like nothing Ive ever heard before. Everything seems to work. The processor fan spins and I can hear and feel the hard drive moving. My old processor works fine in it so the motherboard isnt broken I dont think (though I dont really know a lot so...). Do you need to know what sort of rhythm the beeps are in? Because they all seem to happen quite quickly and loudly.

Re: Blank screen with new cpu.

Is the beeping more like a kind of "siren" noise rather than a simple beep? If so, I think that means that the processor settings are out of range, i.e. your motherboard isn't adjusting to pick up the correct settings for the CPU. Interesting that it sounds like the hard disk is still booting though

Perhaps clearing the BIOS would help? There will be instructions in the motherboard manual on how to do this but the simplest way is to unplug the PC from the mains, remove the motherboard battery for a few minutes, then refit it and plug the system back into the mains power. Note that this will reset ALL the motherboard settings back to the factory default settings.

Before you consider this, double-check the manual in case there are any jumper settings that you need to change in order for the new CPU to work.

Are you sure your board will support it without a BIOS update?

Re: Blank screen with new cpu.

If the old processor works but not the new on have you changed the jumper settings for the fsb on the mobo. I dont know about intel systems as i have an athlon, but you will have to look in the manual and set the jumpers from the 400 fsb to 800

Re: Blank screen with new cpu.

heres another thing(hoorah!) i checked in BIOS and it says that my frequency is currently 100Mhz on my old processor, which has an FSB of 400Mhz. I dont know if thats got anything to do with it, but just though id mention it anyway. and also, on the biostar website, it mentions jumpers used for FSB settings, but the name given isnt on my mother board. cant find it. thanks again.

Re: Blank screen with new cpu.

That's probably the answer then. Is the 100MHz value in the BIOS something that you can change or is it just a display field that you can't edit? If you can change it, then that's what is known as a "jumperless" setting, i.e. you adjust it in the BIOS because there's no jumper on the board.
