Re: Ram issue please help

Upgrading memory isn't always as straightforward as it first seems. There could be a number of reasons why this happens but not taking proper anti-static precautions is certainly risky and could cause damage to the laptop or the components.

Did you remove the original memory module or did you simply add this memory alongside the existing memory? If you added to the original memory, try removing the new memory and check that it still boots OK. Then remove the original memory and fit the new memory on its own. If it works like that, then both memory modules are OK but they aren't compatible with each other.

If the new memory doesn't work and you are absolutely sure that it's the right type (incidentally, how do you know it's the right memory?), then it could be damaged by static.

What are you trying to upgrade in the Toshiba Satellite? I'm not sure which "slot" you're trying to find.

Re: Ram issue please help

Hey thanks for your responce. well that computer comes with standard 32mb of ram which is not removalable because it is in the board. Now i opened the computer and right under the keyboaed i saw a slot in which the memory fit into. So in this case i could not remove the orginal memory moduel and its the right memory because a friend of mine bought the same memory for the same computer and it worked fine. What are the right anti-static precautions that needs to be taken with this chips because this would be the first time I have ever done this.

Re: Ram issue please help

There's lots of anti-static precautions - the list is almost endless. The more precautions you take, the less likely you are to have a problem.

- Make sure the system is unplugged from the mains before you start taking it apart
- Don't work in a dusty room
- Don't work on carpet
- Wear rubber-soled shoes
- Wear an anti-static strap clipped to a metal part of the system you are working on or another suitable metal object such as the metal frame of the desk you are working at
- Always leave components in the sealed anti-static packaging until you need them
- If the system is dusty inside, use a vacuum cleaner to try and suck up some of the dust but don't actually touch anything with it.
- NEVER touch the electrical contact edge on components
