It just won't work!

We have a 98 gateway computer and lately it hasn't been working. when you turn the computer on the monitor flashes a screen that says "Self test, Your monitor is working, Check the Video Cable and PC" once the computer is on, you cannot turn it off you have to unplug it. We have tried getting a new video card but it didn't change. I've seen a few other problems like this online and I've tried all sorts of "solutions", none of which have worked. If you have a suggestion please let me know! It would be greatly appreciated!

Re: It just won't work!

What is the exact model?

Is that the exact & full error message?

What solutions have you tried?

Does the computer beep when you try to start?

Have you tried re-seating the RAM & or CPU?

Basically unplug all devices except RAM, CPU, Graphics Card.

If no beeps try removing the RAM & then start... any beeps now?

Holding the power button for 10 seconds or so doesn't turn it off?

Re: It just won't work!

On the PC it says G6-350 so I guess that would be the model ??

yes, that is the exact full error message...it is seperated into 3 different colored boxes and there is a letter in the bottom right corner of each box (b, g, r)

I've tried the new video card, as i said in the previous post, I've tried unplugging the computer and holding the on button down for a minute and plugging it back in. I've also made sure that all of the cords are connected properly.

The computer does not beep when I start it by plugging it back in, which is the only way to turn it on because it wont go off if I do not unplug it.

I don't know what the RAM is.

And it still doesn't go off no matter how long I hold the power button down.

Re: It just won't work!

Do you have the manual? I am uncertain as to what they specify as "Video Cable".

The G6-350 is no longer listed at Gateway's site although they have this generic page:

http://support.gateway.com/support/m.../desktop.shtml

Scroll down under Installation Guides: Then:

Memory Installation Guide. That is RAM. I would remove & then replace (re-seat).

Also look at:

Processor Installation Drive. That is CPU. I would remove & then replace (re-seat).

Having mentioned that you replaced the Video Card I assume you know how to open the case & follow anti-static precautions.

Re: It just won't work!

Video Cable is the Monitor not detecting the signal. Either your Cable has become unplugged or the Video card has an issue.
