Dell laptops are tricky to replace the LCD panels in as, even in the same Dell model range, they use different manufacturers and LCD models at different times. The only way to be sure of buying the right one is to find the Dell part number on the back of your broken LCD display panel.
As the XPS is the high-performance range, I would have expected that your laptop would have had an SXGA or WXGA screen, not an XGA type.
If you go to Dell's support site (
http://www.dell.com/support) then you can type in your system tag number (this will be on a label underneath your laptop) and that will tell you the configuration that the laptop was built with - you'll be able to see whether your laptop has an XGA screen.
Hope that helps
