Question E:\ is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device er

E:\ is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

I am running XP on a Toshiba Satellite 2430 with a Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-810 Drive. Drive was working fine for several months. I now can play a DVD but not a CD Rom or Audio CD. There isn't an option covered for this in XP Troubleshooting. Every other combination. Have tried rollback, uninstall of driver, autoplay & record options with no joy. Been searching forums for weeks. Can't even run a recovery disk. Anyone encountered this problem with a solution would be greatly apreciated.

What exactly is your problem?

Is this the exact error message:

E:\ is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

What do you do that brings it up?

Did this just start happening?

Were things OK before?

I also poped the drive out and checked the pins on both male n female parts and all pins and receptors are in order and undamaged.

Have you checked the possibilities in these links?

Also: What is the make & model of your drive?

Also have you removed the drive: rebooted without it: reinstalled it?

If the light is on constant or is blinking with no disk it could quite well be the IDE controller. Check the Device Manager for your secondary IDE Channel & any issues.
