I'm going to scream - Please help!

Okay. About six months ago my brother built me a computer from scratch, and since then it has been running great. UNTIL about two weeks ago. All of the sudden, it just started shutting itself down. No error screen, no warning, just boom. Nothing. It will restart if I push the power button again, but it will only stay on for about fifteen seconds, maybe thirty. It's incredibly frustrating because it wont even stay on long enough to check the BIOS and whatnot. What should I do?! I'm ready to smash it with a mallet.

There are a number of things that could cause this to happen. It's most often the power supply at fault - replacing it is the only option to rectify any fault there. It could, however, also be the memory (RAM), processor or motherboard that is faulty.

.... or even an overheating problem. If you leave it alone for a while, will it switch back on and run for a bit longer, e.g. long enough to get into Windows?
