Missing DVD Rom drive

Hi all.

Last week I bought a Firewire card so that I could download from my camcorder but was unable to load the driver. Due to not being in the best frame of mind I left well alone. Today I tried to load the driver for my digital camera. When I put the disk into the DVD ROM nothing happened. I have it on Auto run.

So. I went to the DEVICE MANAGER, scrolled down to DVD/CD-ROM DRIVES, R-clicked on TSST CORP CD/DVDW SH-S182D ATA DEVICE clicked on PROPERTIES. Under the GENERAL tab, in the "DEVICE STATUS" window it says:-

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

Can someone please help me get my DVD ROM working again.

I hope that I have explained correctly, and there is enough info.
Thanks in advance.

ATB Gary.

Re: Missing DVD Rom drive

Go back to the Device Manager and right click the drive and choose Uninstall then reboot the computer.

This will force a driver reload.

Re: Missing DVD Rom drive

Thank you for replying jephree.
I tried what you said, but there is some sort of corruption with a code 39. I checked out the code with Microsoft and did what they said, which is what you said except for one thing. They said in the GENERAL PROPERTIES tab to click on TROUBLESHOOT. I don't have a troubleshoot button.

Any other suggestions? Please.

PS, Samsung say that they don't do a driver, because it's already in the computer or something. Something to do with Microsoft. Is there any way to replace the driver, or uncorrupt it?

Re: Missing DVD Rom drive

Uninstalling the drive forces Windows to reinstall its driver on reboot.

This driver is within Vista.

I would remove your firewire card and verify that the DVD drive is detected in your BIOS.

You can also try to Uninstall the Secondary channel assuming that the drive is on the Secondary channel under IDE/ATA/ATAPI controllers in the Device Manager.

Re: Missing DVD Rom drive

Hi.

Thanks for your help.
I was told of a program that fixed my problem. The program is called CDgone. (http://www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip),

If there is anyone else with a similar problem, and wants to try this program, I was told to:-

Download CDgone, R-click on downloaded file.
Choose "EXTRACT ALL", then D-click on "cdgone.reg" say "yes" to the merge question, then reboot.
See if the drives have returned.

I was also told that I may have to re-install CD burning applications, since they're the ones that tinker with the filter settings in the registry that caused the drives to disappear.

I had no need to do this.
I hope this is of some help to someone.

Again, I would like to thank you jephree.
Sharla.
