DirectX 10 and XP

I recently bought a new XFX 8800 GTX GPU (hasnt arrived in the mail yet) and, silly me, I may not have researched it properly. I read somewhere today that DX10 GPU's only work with vista... is this true? and if so is it worth upgrading to Vista from XP, from what I've heard Vista isnt exactly compatable with alot of Apps. (unless you wanna play Halo 3....you NEED Vista...what a load a ****) any help would be great. Thanks.
Dan

Re: DirectX 10 and XP

You need vista to utilize DirectX 10.

XFX 8800 GTX will run DirectX 9. I am using two of them as we type.

Where did you read that?

The Vista/XP question has many opinions. Try this thread:

Your experiences of Vista performance

I personally am sticking with XP until Windows 7 comes out.

Re: DirectX 10 and XP

Hey Jeph, thakns for the reply, so in games that utilise dx10 features like Crysis I wont be able to use them on XP right?
I read it in a game review at gamespot.com.
Windows 7...Blackcomb... or what ever they call it, it'll be a while for that, wont it. at least 3-4years. What makes you think it'll be any better than Vista? Thanks.
Dan
Oh and how do the two cards run for you, game wise if you are a gamer.

Re: DirectX 10 and XP

Features of DirectX 10 depend on Vista.

Crysis and any game to date will run on DirectX 9.

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/pcs/direc...for-243099.php

Unless a program is written specifically for DirectX 10 it will work on 9 as well.

Unless a program is written specifically for Vista it will work on XP as well.

I know of no Vista exclusive games at this point.

I have heard 2-4 years for Windows 7 (or whatever the latest nick is).

Supposedly it is a new file system. As Windows 2000 and XP went to NTFS from the FAT of ME or '98 or '95.

Vista was at one time supposed to carry this new file system but the delays in development forced MS to abandon it in Vista.

This makes me think that Vista was released as a compromised system just to have a new system on the market.

This is just my opinion from browsing the news reports.

I run 2 X 8800 GTX 756MB in SLi with a quad core 6600.

It is beautiful! I don't have Crysis but have the Orange Box; Bioshock; just to name the latest.

Re: DirectX 10 and XP

Sweet. I'd read a little about Windows 7 but still remain sceptical, you make a good point though, to keep the consumers happy for now, throw them scraps... not to diss Vista but most of what I've read is either bad or at best blurry in terms how good it is.
Results are so varied that I really need to just buy Vista and see how it goes.
To me the difference in DX10 and 9 are fairly obvious. I tried playing Crysis with my current cards 2 Geforce 7600GS in SLi...yeah, nah!
I'm really hoping that the 8800 will be an improvement or its a waste of $700.
From what I've seen Halo 2 is a Vista only game.

Havnt seen anyothers though.
Thanks for the help Jeph.
Regards,
Dan
