Problem with desktop

Had a power failure last night and, now, when I boot up, my Desktop shows up all white with a statement at the top, "Active Desktop Recovery," and an option to Restore Active Desktop if you had a power failure. When I click on the gray restore box, a new box pops us that says, "Internet Explorer script error
An error has occured in the script on this pge. Do you want to continue running script on this page?" Whether I click yes or no, the box just closes and I'm back where I started with my white Active Desktop Recovery screen.
This has to be fairly easy to fix. Any ideas?

Re: Problem with desktop

Followed the instructions in the link. First, did a search for desktop.htt. It came up empty. Did a manual search on the path included in the directions, and found three instances of desktop.htt--don't know why search couldn't find them. I did have the protected files unchecked. Anyway, deleted the three instances of desktop.htt, and rebooted. Problem persisted and, as predicted, desktop.htt was regenerated in the three locations.
Did a search again. This time it found the three files I'd deleted in the trashcan, but it didn't find the new, regenerated files. Any other thoughts?

Re: Problem with desktop

Just discovered something else interesting. My wife and I have our own separate accounts and desktops. Just realized hers is fine and has been all along. Mine is the only one screwed up. Does this suggest something?

Re: Problem with desktop

Do you run a web page on your desktop?

This is the purpose of Active Desktop. It allows you to use a web page for your desktop (background).

If you do not do this then simply turn off this feature:

Open the Control Panel.
Open the Display icon.
Click the Desktop tab.
Click the Customize Desktop button.
Click the Web tab in the Desktop Items window.
If you wish to enable the Active Desktop, check "My Current Home Page". Add your current home page into your desktop or click New to add another web page and/or other Active Desktop features. To update the content, click the Synchronize button.

If you wish to disable Active Desktop, make sure all checkboxes in this window are un-checked.

Re: Problem with desktop

I also should have mentioned trying a System Restore.

System Restore
--------------------------------------------------
You might try a System Restore to a point prior to your problem:

start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

If still no go try making a new account and transferring your data as seen here:

How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile in Windows XP

Other ideas perhaps in this Google although many suggest a Repair Install which at this point in time would be considered an extreme measure.

active desktop recovery - Google Search

Re: Problem with desktop

I came up with the idea of creating a new user account on my own, and was going to give that a try. Then I got the suggestion to turn off Active Desktop. I never realized what Active Desktop meant. I turned it off and, voila, problem solved. Thanks. I have another thing that's been plaguing me lately, but I'll start a new thread for that.
