Firefox.exe / Internet Explorer "has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Hi All,

The error I'm experiencing is very similar to those described in the following threads:

Firefox has encountered an error...

IE/foxfire.exe has encountered an error

My situation is slightly different than either, however, and that's why I'm starting a new thread. Following are the key differences and (hopefully) relevant information:

1. I have never run HijackThis on my (laptop) computer. I run AVG (Free Edition) for antivirus and Windows Defender for spyware/adware. Both run a daily scan and do not detect any virus or malware on my computer.

2. I am running Firefox 1.5.0.7, and still encounter the error. (I've been experiencing it for close to a year now.)

3. I only receive the error on certain websites, and sometimes, only in certain areas of websites. The error is consistent in two ways: first, I always experience it in the same areas of websites - it doesn't change randomly. Second, wherever I experience it in Firefox, I experience it in the identical website area in IE. (This is true for both IE6 and IE7 - I'm presently running IE7.)

I'm running Windows XP/Service Pack 2, which came preinstalled on my laptop. I'll be happy to provide any additional information necessary. In addition, if a fix from either of the aforementioned threads is applicable to my case, feel free to just reference which fix and which thread.

Thanks in advance for any assistance provided.

Sam

Re: Firefox.exe / Internet Explorer "has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Just to clarify: the only problem is with certain areas of certain websites?

Are they secure areas? Areas that might be blocking you or you them?

Have you checked your Ristricted sites and Security options?

If you want please post the links and we can test them.

Is this the only problem with your computer?

Also:

Look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for red X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id & Description especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.
Also check the Information lines that might coincide with this issue.

Re: Firefox.exe / Internet Explorer "has encountered a problem and needs to close"

I don't know about Internet Explorer but with Firefox this doesn't usually cocur.
I would look to your OS for the problems immediately.

One question: have you been in system hibernate or do you return from hibernate when this happens?

There is an issue when this occurs after you return from hibernation.
A reboot would fix that but as to the actual problem, I have no idea why its caused.

Re: Firefox.exe / Internet Explorer "has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Thank you both for following up. First, an answer to your questions:

Quote:
Just to clarify: the only problem is with certain areas of certain websites?
Yes - I've documented examples below, along with the Event Viewer messages that coincide.

Quote:
Are they secure areas? Areas that might be blocking you or you them?
Neither of these examples are secure areas, nor do I notice it happening more often in secure areas. I have confirmed that the errors occur whether or not I block cookies. In addition, I have the Firefox extension 'NoScript' installed, which blocks scripts from executing on web pages. I have also verified that these errors occur whether scripts are blocked or not. I don't see any indication that I'm being blocked by these sites in any way.

Quote:
Have you checked your Ristricted sites and Security options?
Neither of these sites are restricted on my computer, and my security settings are at the default levels.

Quote:
Is this the only problem with your computer?
I occasionally receive the same type of error in Microsoft Word. When it happens in Word, however, it's random (no pattern to errors), and usually occurs when I'm pushing my system hard (i.e. numerous open applications, windows, etc.)

Quote:
One question: have you been in system hibernate or do you return from hibernate when this happens?
This error doesn't appear to be related to system hibernation in any way.

~-~-~-~-~

jephree,

Below are a couple of examples of the errors I'm receiving, in both Firefox and IE, and including the Event Viewer Error Messages. I've tried to lay out the information in an organized way, but feel free to let me know if anything's unclear, or if you need additional information to diagnose the problem.

Thanks,
Sam

Re: Firefox.exe / Internet Explorer "has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Thanks for the detailed response!

At cooltext is it only those two options that crash? Can you use the others?

At originotions is it only those two URL's?

They work fine for me BTW.

The cooltext site has made my Firefox nearly jam just now!

And I'm pretty sure any minute now I'll get the window for the firefox.exe error.

Re: Firefox.exe / Internet Explorer "has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Hey jephree,

Thanks for your quick reply. Just for clarification, the examples above include one instance on each site that does generate the error, and one instance that doesn't. For CoolText, the following logos generate the error:

3D Outline Gradient
Alien Glow
Animated Glow
Blended
Chrome Two
Embossed
Glossy
Gradient Bevel
Outline
Pixel Badge
Textured

These logos do not generate the error:

3D Outline Textured
Bovinated
Burning
Carved
Chalk
Chrome One
COmic
Cool Metal
Crystal
Cutout
Felt
Fire
Glowing Hot
Glowing Steel
Neon
Nova
Old Stone
Simple
Slab
Starburst

Since Originotions uses a free text field, there are infinite possible entries. I can say that most of the RSS feeds I paste into the field generate the error, and occasionally I come across one that doesn't.

Let me know what you think...

Thanks,
Sam

Hrm...sorry to drag you down into the dregs with me. As I mentioned previously, I've been experiencing this error for close to a year, but never on the CoolText site until the last couple of weeks...

Try to start in Safe Mode with Networking:

Try booting into Safe Mode options:

After the power-on and BIOS POST or your Logo screen repeatedly tap the F8 key or hold the Ctrl key before Windows starts.

Choose: Safe Mode with Networking

See if these things work from there. If so you have some driver confliction somewhere.

Re: Firefox.exe / Internet Explorer "has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Its ok Sam, thanks.
I get the jam on the cooltext site no matter what I do. A tech freind of mine who tests for Firefox and Thunderbird can't even access the site through Firefox 2 "page not found"

Both of us are trying it with computers fully functional and Firefox being completely stable otheriwse.

I think its an extensions issue it seems OR maybe some weird happening with a plugin thats required.
