If you are still getting the error, then I would start to suspect malware, or network connection problems - which can be as simple as a bad cable. How do you connect?
One IE7 Tool I like is "Reset". You just installed and I wonder if it imported some of your IE6 settings. Check out Tools > Internet Option > Advanced, then at the bottom, see what Reset does - if me, I would click it.
And just to make sure, run though
Malwarebytes's Anti-Malware (MBAM). This is an excellent tool I use for supplemental scanning.
BTW, IE7 may take a bit to get used to, but once you do, I think you will like it. I use it exclusively. I have two add-ons, the Google Toolbar with almost all its options disabled or not installed, and IE7Pro - which, among many other tools, provides an in-line spell checker - great for people that fat-finger the keyboard all the time, or for those that care about presenting a professional image by not misspelling wurds... err, words.

Laptop is very slow as well.

Sadly, just keeping ahead of the badguys forces us to load up our systems with evermore demanding resource hogging security tools before we can ever begin to use our regular programs, such as the browser. This results in our computers, which ran great a couple years ago, less able to meet the demands they could easily do back then. How much RAM do you have? How much free disk space?
Also, mobile CPUs will toggle down the throttle when they get hot - and controlling heat in the small confines of a laptop case is always a critical and difficult task. Check your temps and make sure all vents, ports, etc. are clean, and fans are turning. If getting on in years, or used in a dusty environment, consider taking the laptop to a pro and have it disassembled and cleaned from the inside out.
