Questions about RAM and Graphics card upgrade

Okay I have a fairly old pc and I want to upgrade the RAM and video card to meet the requirements for World of Warcraft and Counter Strike and other games that I am unable to play because of my specs.

I was wondering if any brand of ram and video card would work because this is my first time upgrading a PC and I dont want to waste money on something that wont work.

I also took a look inside and saw 2 PCI slots free and 1 ram slot and 1 AGP slot free. Also when buying a video card which would be a better solution PCI or a AGP card? Now I have no Idea how to put them in when I buy them if someone could shed some light on that.

If any additional info is needed please tell me and thank you for your time.

Re: Questions about RAM and Graphics card upgrade

AGP is vastly superior to PCI. The most recent hardware is PCI_E.

AGP 8X is 8 times faster than PCI. PCI_E is 16X. Your board might only run AGP 4X however.

We need to ID the motherboard to check the specifications and limitations.

What is listed under CPU_Z for Mainboard > Manufacturer and Model?

Re: Questions about RAM and Graphics card upgrade

http://www.fic.com.tw/product/mother...ntel/VG33.aspx

Memory 2 DIMM slot / DDR 266 / 333 SDRAM support / Non ECC support / Max. 2 GB total

Expand Slots 3 PCI / 1 x AGP 4x slot

Most AGP cards you will see are 8X/4X meaning they are backwards compatible. So although the card could run at 8X it will only run at 4X due to the constraints of your motherboard.

Also a good RAM scan here: http://www.crucial.com/

Re: Questions about RAM and Graphics card upgrade

Can you confirm that you have an eMachines W4885 Desktop/PC?

If so I would trust the Crucial scan.

Mixing with what you already have might be an issue but it is hard to tell. If you can afford it I would buy all new. The same brand and size > speed etc. Two matching sticks.

Any 8X/4X AGP card should work.

Great thanks for the information and yes it is a eMachines W4885 Desktop.

I have a question on how to install my Graphics card and RAM after I buy them do I just slide it into the slot? Is there any instructions on how to do this?

And where could I buy a descent 8X/4X AGP card?

Re: Questions about RAM and Graphics card upgrade

The RAM has a clip on either end. Press out to release installed RAM. To install new RAM press into the board until the clips lock themselves. Sometimes this requires doing one side at a time depending on how much room you have for two hands etc.

The AGP card just slips in. You need to remove the rear panel blank where it will exit the case and then there is a screw to secure it to the case.

There are some details in the manual:

http://www.fic.com.tw/support/downlo...ip&info=manual

If you have any problems we can dig up more tutorials for you but this is rather simple.

You should read this if you are not familiar with working inside the case:
