Re: Compaq Presario 5000 Series CPU Upgrade

Yes they are the same.

There is a floppy version and a Windows version. If you have a floppy I'd suggest that.

Floppy:

Presario Desktop Models System ROM Update (686Y2 Family ROM) Compaq Presario 5330US Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

Directions for "Download Only" option Compaq Presario 5330US Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

Windows:

CPQFlash Utility for Presario Desktop System ROM Update (686Y2 Family ROM) Compaq Presario 5330US Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

Directions for "Download Only" option Compaq Presario 5330US Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

They say this will upgrade the CPU to:

Adds support for Pentium C1 stepping microprocessors. Adds support for Celeron B1 stepping microprocessors.

Whether or not it will accept the 800 FSB is a question I cannot find an answer to but the latest BIOS would be your only hope.

Re: Compaq Presario 5000 Series CPU Upgrade

No, it didn't work.

If other people have the same problem that I did, please read this:

I've talked to HP Chat Support.

HP Chat Support.

Tranzopus : Updating CPU Current: Intel Pentium 4 478Socket 1.7Ghz/256/400 Updating: Intel Pentium 4 478Socket 3Ghz/1M/800 Current: System Rom: 686Y2 v1.05 Firmware Updated on 10/10/09: System Rom: 686Y2 v3.04 Updated both. 1) CPQFlash Utilit
[An agent will be with you shortly.]
[You are now chatting with Victor .]
Victor : Welcome to HP Total Care for Desktop support. My name is Victor. Please give me a few moments while I review your issue description.

NOTE: For security reasons, PLEASE DO NOT send credit card information via chat.

Victor : How are you doing today, Tranzopus?
Tranzopus : Good. Hope you're doing ok.
Victor : Yes, glad to know that you are good. I am doing fine. Thank you.
Victor : Let me confirm that your PC model is 5330us. Am I correct?
Tranzopus : Problem: Update Processor doesn't work after the bios update.
Tranzopus : Yes
Tranzopus : Also Update processor didn't work before the bios update.
Victor : Thank you for your information.
Tranzopus : Am confidant that the processor works because I bought it new.
Victor : Alright.
Victor : This issue could happen if motherboard is not compatible to support the new processor.
Tranzopus : What model is my motherboard
Victor : As you are using pretty old computer, the motherboard installed on the computer may not support the processor that you are trying to install.
Victor : Product Specifications - HP Customer Care (United States - English)
Victor : Processor Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor - 1700 MHz (1.7 GHz)
System Bus 400 MHz System Bus
Cache • 12K micro-op trace cache

• 8KB L1 Advanced Transfer Cache

• 256KB L2 Advanced Transfer Cache

Victor : L1 and L2 cache are different than the originally installed processor as it is pretty old motherboard.
Tranzopus : 3Ghz/1M/800 instead of that it should be 3Ghz/1M/400 Clock rate?
Victor : It may not support the one that you are trying to install as it is 800 FSB with 1 MB cache memory.
Tranzopus : Whats my limit.
Victor : Please give me 5 minutes I will get back with the exact information.
Tranzopus : If I buy a motherboard for a micro case, an update, shouldn't be a problem? but as long I have the right 478 socket motherboard, better power supply and of course I have the good CPU already. Bottom Line, Do you know the top best newest motherboards by compaq so it can run the processor?
Victor : Thank you for being online with me. I appreciate your patience.
Tranzopus : At least that can run systems (3D MAX, 3D games)
Tranzopus : Yes I know
Victor : Tranzopus, the computer model that you are using pretty old, its not compatible to install any new motherboard, the chasis won't support the new motherboard design.
Victor : Instead of upgrading the motherboard, you can go for our latest computers.
Victor : We have different computer models with latest technology, depend on your requirement, choose the best and buy.
Victor : For more information, please vist our www.shopping.hp.com website,
Victor : You will find all the information.
Victor : To run 3D MX and 3D games, you need to have very good more video memory video card.
Victor : Please go for elite PC models ( entertainment ) available on our shopping website.
Tranzopus : Yes, I know Compaq like customers to buy the hole package. They don't like customers upgrading the computers. Yes, I know about the video card, I don't think motherboard can handle that. I used to have and old compaq computer but I'm sure if the "Dimensions & Weights" fit, it should handle new motherboards.
Tranzopus : Thanks for helping.
Victor : You are most welcome.
Victor : Is there any other technical issue I can assist you with today?
Victor : I suggest you to go for new computer instead of spending more money for Motherboard , processors and Video cards.
Tranzopus : Nope. I'm on my own for now on. I will build one. Learn something new everyday.
Tranzopus : Thank you and have a nice day.
Victor : Even if you spent more money also you may not possible to get suitable Motherboard for your PC.
Victor : You are most welcome.
Tranzopus : Yes I know.
Victor : You have a nice day too.
Victor : It was a pleasure chatting to you today.
Tranzopus : Do I click on "end chat"? how does this end?
Victor : If you click on End button you will get the Save option to save this chat session in your PC.
Victor : It will prompt you to Yes or No to save , if you click on Yes it will be saved in your PC, if you don't want to save click on No.
Victor : Thank you for contacting HP Total Care Real-Time chat support. If you need further assistance, please contact us again at:

Victor : Take care and bye.

THAT WAS IT.

My opinion, It's just customer service where Compaq/HP try to make you buy a new computer.

I HOPE THIS HELPS TO THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE THE SAME ISSUES!!

Re: Compaq Presario 5000 Series CPU Upgrade

Thanks for the update.

If the motherboard cannot accept the CPU because of the FSB then as their support says the hardware is simply incompatible.

If you would like assistance in a new build please ask.

We have a few custom builders, including myself, here at DAL.

Thanks for helping me!

I hope you can help me build a PC!

Just a curiousity after you read the "Help me to build a PC that can handle 3D's the following requirements:" post, what's the range between 1-10 that I know about computers?
