HELP - O2 Mobile Broadband Dongle connection

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have bought an O2 USB Mobile Broadband dongle see http://www.littlewoodsdirect.com/rf/...ial&SNu=pca_id so that I can access pay as you go. I have an Acer AspireOne Netbook with 512 mb Ram and 120Gb HDD. It is running Linpus™ Linux® Lite version see http://www.acer.co.uk/acer/product.d...rAjaxHistory=4 for tech spec. The browser is Firefox.

I have got (I think) the latest updates installed for Linux that I was told should allow an idiot like me to just connect. I'm obviously a bigger idiot than people think!! What I am struggling with is getting the dongle to connect so that I can get online. I have tried going through connection manager and 3G in the menu, but to no avail. The light on the dongle goes solid blue/turquoise but I just cannot get it to open. To be honest I do not really know how I got the light to come on! I can see the dongle in connection manager, but when I highlight it it does not give me the option (as it does with my normal WiFi) to connect. The connection option just stays pale grey in the background. In fact I'm not sure if I have even installed the dongle correctly.

An idiots guide to what I should be doing and how to do it will be very much appreciated. As I'm not at home I do not have the Netbook with me so will have trouble providing specific answers to any questions. I will give it a go though if anyone can help otherwise the answers will have till wait till tonight.

many thanks

Re: HELP - O2 Mobile Broadband Dongle connection

For Starters, Neither one of your links are working. So I can't tell what specific dongle you are trying to connect.

Second, I don't run Linpus. But I will try to help if I can. I installed Easy Peasy 1.1 on my Wifes Acer Aspire one and run Xandros on my Asus EEE 900. I also run AntiX, Ubuntu, And Linux Mint on my other computers.

Linpus Lite is based on Fedora. It has it's own quirks and is a very limited distro/OS. I have read where it has been described as a crippled Fedora. Just letting you know what I know about Linpus. A lot of users go with EEEBuntu 3.0 Standard or Easy Peasy 1.1. Just mentioning it, not suggesting you change.

First off. Have you installed Gnome PPP using Linpus Lite Package Manager or Yum. (I run all apt distros instead of rpm distros so forgive if I don't know all the steps.)

You can refer to this thread to get connected.

Linux.com :: Acer aspire one linpus 3 mobile broadband

To get into advanced Desktop Mode that is described in the thread, the Video is HERE

And another good thread on it can be found HERE

That is all you will get from me because I see you have similar threads open in other forums and I won't know what is going on in those.O2 USB Mobile (Cell) Broadband Dongle Connection Help - Computer Juice - Forums

Good Luck.
