Re: Need help modding a Dell Dimension XPS Gen4

Hi Odd, sorry for the late response. I'm currently busy packing for my trip back to Minnesota and I'll be busy with class registration and work up until approximately Monday or so. I'll help you check if I can manage to squeeze in some time, but perhaps the other forum members can help you check as well.

One thing though, case modding is not something I've attempted before so I might not be able to help you with that.

Thanks for being patient.

Sorry to hear that,

I hear good things about this site and its quick and accurate help. But I'm going to be moving my topic to another site to stick to my schedule. Thanks for any help, none that I can't think of at the momment. I'm not gonna be a burden on anybody.

Take it easy, Odd

This site IS a good and reliable site, I'm just not the most active member around.

Re: Need help modding a Dell Dimension XPS Gen4

I was surfing around 'cos I have a XPS Gen 3/4 'puter and am looking at some possible upgrades. I stumbled upon this thread and thought I'd help you out a bit.

The XPS Gen 3 and Gen 4 are essentially the same except that the gen 4 will except a 925XE chipset, while the gen 3 won't. The gen 3 is a blue case, while the gen 4 is silver.

Also I saw you typed that you have a Pentium 4 dual core. It is not a dual core. Dual core chips are not compatible with gen 3 or gen 4. It's a Pentium 4 with HT Technology (hyper-threading technology).

You can install up to 4gigs (4x1) of ram in it. I'd recommend Crucial, but there are others out there. Make sure you get ram that is compatible. Look for 533-MHz DDR2 unbuffered SDRAM, non-ECC. I didn't get any with heatsinks 'cos there are plenty of fans built into the case to keep them cool. I also didn't get any of the Crucial sticks with lights 'cos I can't see them through the case, and I am not really into all the flashy lights anyway.

The bios settings is where you can go into to change the lighting on the front of the case. I haven't done it in awhile, but I know that I can change it from several different colors. The colors that are available are: off (no light), ruby, emerald, sapphire (default), amber, amethyst, topaz, diamond. (Diamond is with all the different colors on to give it a rainbow of colors).

I actually built my xps myself 'cos I got a great deal on a scratch and dent gen 3 case a few years ago off ebay. It was essentially a brand new case with psu, but it had a blemish on the outside. I didn't know at the time, but it is a proprietary case, which meant I had to hunt for some dell specific components to get it running (mobo and heatsink mainly). I installed a gen 4 mobo after I learned they are essentially the same.

I can't post links yet, but go to "support. dell. com" (no spaces), and search for the user manual for the xps gen 3 or 4, and you should be able to learn more about your computer.

I'm not too sure about video cards yet. I have an AIW video card in mine right now, so I'm also looking at upgrading it as well.

My current setup:
XPS Gen 3 w/ Gen 4 Mobo
P4 3.2GHz, 2Mb Cache, 800 FSB
3Gb's Crucial DDR2 Ram
Seagate 300Gb HDD
AIW 2006 Edition 256mb Video Card
Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Sound Card
Stock floppy and dvd-burner
Windows XP Pro
Microsoft 4000 wireless keyboard and mouse
hooked up to my tv.
