Media Player 9 - help!

I have MP9 installed on windows 98se. It won't let me play cds in digital mode - it keeps switching to analogue even after I've tried to change the settings in Devices to digital. Cds sound "tinny" and sometimes play with an echo! When I play CDs in Start/Programs/Accessories/Entertainment/CD Player, I don't get the problem.
Any solutions out there?
Thanks.

this is from the microsoft help pages

Your hardware (CD-ROM drive and speakers) determines whether you can copy and listen to tracks by using digital or analog audio. You should select the settings that work best with your hardware.

thanks wildthing. The trouble is, this problem has only just arisen - the cd-rom has always used digital playback in the past but won't with mp9.
