Bitorrent Freezes My Comp

I read some other posts... mines different.

I have XP pro... this Bittorrent client ran fine on my Win98 machine... but with XP pro... it completely locks up my comp after a few minutes. By completely I mean... no mouse, no keyboard, nothing... I have to do a cold reboot and start over...

Here's my hi jack this log:

Re: Bitorrent Freezes My Comp

Are you sure that it is compatible with XP?

Are you sure the download is OK?

Have you tried many different downloads?

Have you cleared access thru the firewall?

You can look for errors here:

Look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id especially of errors that seem to coincide with a crash.

Also view your Error Log via:
[1] Start Menu
[2] Help and Support
[3] Pick a Task
[4] Tools
[5] Advanced System Information
[6] View the Error Log

Also perhaps something here may help:

Re: Bitorrent Freezes My Comp

I read the Bittorrent FAQ already...

Here are the errors: (I actually started the client to make the comp freeze, then copied the errors that it showed)

Re: Bitorrent Freezes My Comp

The Time errors may be sorted by checking Control Panel | Date & Time.
Set the proper Date & Time & also open the Internet Time tab & Uncheck: Automatically synchronize...

The other errors appear more relevant: (are you on a network?)

http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?e...MRxSmb&phase=1

http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?e...Server&phase=1

Also if you want to dig deeper:

Go to start | search (type in) .dmp
Note the time & location of your latest .dmp file.
If it appears to coincide with this issue:

Then:

1) Download and install the
Debugging Tools from Microsoft
2) Download and install this
debugwiz
3) Open the Wiz & Browse to, or paste in the path to, your latest .dmp file.
4) After the Wiz creates a Text document attach it back to this thread.

Re: Bitorrent Freezes My Comp

I did search for .dmp... no files found.

As for being on a network, I have an arrangement with my neighboring apartment tennant... he lets me hit his wireless router.

There's no WEP on the router... all the settings are default.

I made an exception in the XP firewall for WANS and LANS like one of the links you gave me said to... no help... still freezes.

I just dont get it... surely there is a simple fix... any ideas?

Re: Bitorrent Freezes My Comp

Well... the client I was using without a problem with WIN98 and am trying to use now is BitTorrent 4.0.2.

I have also tried BitTornado and ABC (Another Bittorrent Client)... with same result.

Re: Bitorrent Freezes My Comp

First stop is to update any drivers for any local modem/router/network cards.

The try decreasing the number of simultaneous global connections (probably in advance prefs in BitTorrent/Bit Tornado. Try halfing the number first (usually set to 0/unlimited or 1000, so set umber to 50)

Basically its the half-open tcp connections that tend to cause most systems to lock-up.

One more thing, try running your client for 24-hours with no torrents active and see what happens. No lock-up will indicate that the system is stressed due to too many connections.

Re: Bitorrent Freezes My Comp

well... i check everything else... I found a "fix windows TCP stack" box... I checked it... ran a little better.

I will be running the client without any torrents active. If it runs well... what else can I do to lower the number of connections?

Re: Bitorrent Freezes My Comp

Are you running Service pack 2? If you are then you've fallen victim to the tcp limit that sp2 has to prevent dos attacks etc. google for the patch that restores the limit - 'sp2 tcp connection patch'

If you dont have sp2, then switch to one of the other clients you mentioned and reduce the global connections.
