98/XP compatibility...

Hey, I got a 'ineractive' cd. I was created during the win 98 days. Now I am trying to run it on my win xp andit cant. it is able to load on to the coputer and all, the program opens up but when I try o start the activities on it, i get error screens then it closes out.

It is a multi media calculus I cd by pro one. I did some checking and they'e apparently closed down so i cant email them for no support.

I know that xp allows you to run in compatibilioty modes but when i try that choosing 256 mode it still doesnt work.

How can I get it running cause i need to get ontop of this calculus. I was considering loading win 98 in a hard drive then try running it form that hard drive but thats alot of work and am not sure if it would work.
Can I get your suggestions please.

Re: 98/XP compatibility...

Welll I made an error firstly, its actually windows '95.

OK so I click on the desktop icon, the console opens. Then I try selecting one of the tasks within the cd to get an application running and I get one of two messages, it either says "the file is not a windows help file. A newer version of the help is needed to run thishelp file" or "Invalid property value" and with this last message the entire colsole closes and takes you back to the desktop.

Exclamation 'C' files... what are they, need some help.

I am trying to get a cd to work on my computer. It was made in the win '95 era. Its a video/audio kinda thing, a math tutor. Now when I load the program on the computer and try opening it, it tells me that 'help file not available, needs newer version'

I did some checking into the files on the CD and notice that some files are avi files so it is able to play with real player. However that is just the introduction for each lesson on the CD. The actual lessons for each... chapter1.1 chapter1.2 ect are what I see called "C" files

What exactly are these and how do I get them to open. I am running on windows XP.

Alsodoing some browsing and experimenting... when I select folder and scroll down to folder option. Under VIEW tab I opt to see file extensions and under the FILES TYPE tab it shows ths files and what software opens them. I see "C" files in the list and it says it is opened with Microsoft (R) Developer studio.

Now I dont know what these are and I figure thats why my CD doesnt work on the XP since it was created for Win '95. (and I dont have any program like that on my computer)

Can you shed some light here and help me out so I can get this CD running, its got some calculus on it that I really need to learn.

Thanks

Re: 'C' files... what are they, need some help.

.c files are files written within the C++ language.

The errors you are receiving are indicating issues with the help file structure.

The Program Compatibility Wizard is part of Help & Support.

Quote:
Invalid property value (Error 380)
Specifics

Most properties only accept values of a certain type, within a certain range. This error has the following cause and solution:

An inappropriate value has been assigned to a property.
See the property's Help topic to determine what types and range of values are appropriate for the property.

For additional information, select the item in question and press F1.

Microsoft Developer Studio was probably used to develop this program.

Are you running XP SP2?

Do you have .NET Framework installed?

What is the exact name; title; manufacturer of this program?

Have you searched online for any info from them?

Yes I am running on XP SP2. I am not so sure however what is a .NET
Frameowrk. You may have to help me out on that one.

Ok the name manufacturer etc is PRO One Multimedia Calculus I(version 3.5). Pro One is a division of Sofsource Inc. I tried searching on the net but from what I gather they are closed down now, didnt find a reason.

As fir the error message saying improper property value, it doesnt gove a error code like 380 or nothing.

Re: 'C' files... what are they, need some help.

As to .NET Framework look under Control Panel/ Add Remove Programs. Is Microsoft .NET Framework listed?

I see the program here:
http://www.nothingbutsoftware.com/ca...de=9613&ai=596
With the system requierments:

Windows 95/98/Me or XP
Video display of 256 colors or greater
Minimum display resolution of 640x480 at 256 colors
2xCD-ROM drive16-bit sound card

Is this a program that you install or does it just run off of the CD?

If it is installed have you tried uninstalling & reinstalling?

Re: 'C' files... what are they, need some help.

The one I have looks differnt form the one displayed on the link you found. Mine seems defiantely to be anolder version cause unlike the one you found, mine doesnt say anythign botu win XP. It only gives instructions for win 3.1 and Win 95 users nothing else. Its says version 3.1 So its probably a old one me get..........lol

AS for the4 .Net platform, I dont see it there. What is it about what does it do andhow/where do I get it. How would it help my situation? Let me know cause I am willingto try anything if it could work.

I didnt try to un-install then re-install. It runs off the disk, eventhough its installed the disc has to be in the tray for it to operate.

Re: 'C' files... what are they, need some help.

.NET Framework is used by software developers. Some software written with it also needs it installed on the user end. Some of your errors indicate this.

Do you take Windows Updates? (as it should be there) Or else you can find it here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

It is a large download but is also removable if you find that you do not need it.

Have you tried to install/run this CD on another XP computer?
