erase hard disk drive

Hi know that even when you format a computers hard drive, there are still traces of data that are left.
I have downloaded the HDDLowLevelFormatTool. I have not used it but I reckon it would securely erase all data from a hard drive. Does anyone else know of any other program that would do a better job?

tuneup utilities 2008 there is a part of that program called tuneup shredder which uses a method developed by the US Department of Defence (DoD 5220.2-m)
Before being deleted, the files are overwritten several times with certain data patterns, thus nullifying the original content so that even expensive examinations of the magnetic structure of the drive in special laboratories cannot lead to data recovery.

there is one downside this is not a free program.
