DivX and PC to TV problems

A while back I bought and installed the most recent DivX player package. Up until then I had been happily watching my video files on my television, using a PC to TV cable. Once the install was complete I found that my capability to watch videos on my television had stopped.

My PC desktop still appears on my television, along with the player window but when I play anything, the video shows up fine on my PC screen but there's just an empty black box on my television screen. I tried some other players and found they'd all been rendered useless too and it was affecting all types of video files.

I got in touch with DivX support but so far they have been unable to work out the issue. I'm hoping someone might be able to give some advice on how to rectify this problem. I have tried uninstalling my current version of DivX player and reinstalling my older version but that doesn't solve the problem. I can only imagine that somehow, the new version of DivX has made some kind of change to my PC.

I also have a further question if no one can solve the first issue! Can anyone out there recommend free software for burning DVDs from my PC to play on my regular R2 DVD player and some comprehensive instructions on how to use it? I tried a few bits of software but ended up with DVDs that wouldn't register/play on my DVD player. I have a DVD burner and a stack of DVD RW discs but can't seem to do anything with them!

I'd be SO grateful if someone out there could help me. Am at my wits end.
