SpyBot

When I run Spybot, it gets to the part where it looks for a piece of spyware called 'virtumonde.dll' and then hangs. Why doies it do this? Curiously, it happens in Safe Mode too.
The VundoFix tool detects nothing; but why does it hang?

Windows XP SP2
512MB
SpyBot 1.6.0
AVG 8
Windows Firewall

Re: SpyBot

I cant do Hijack This (please read below)
AVG found 24 pieces of spyware and removed them; when I turned on this morning, I got an 'invalid system disk' message. There is no floppy or the CD in the drives. The BIOS is fine, any clues?
Good news is the computer has been backed up!

Re: SpyBot

What type of XP CD do you have?

Is the hard drive detected in the BIOS?

If so is the proper hard drive set to boot?

Error indicates the BIOS cannot find anything to boot.

First try would be boot the XP CD into the Recovery Console and try the command: FIXBOOT

Re: SpyBot

It looks that way. I went into the RC, did a bootcfg /scan and it couldn't find any disks.
The settings are all correct
The BIOS is finding the hard disk and it's set to the right one.
I am using a Windows XP Home SP2 CD

Re: SpyBot

Other possible commands:

FIXMBR

or

BOOTCFG /REBUILD

If no luck a Repair Install would be the next best try.

Re: SpyBot

In the end, I booted it up with the Linux System Rescue CD, and discovered that the hard disk had failed!
So I purchased a new disk from Dabs (Seagate 160GB SATA) and I'm reinstalling Windows. The particular disk I got needed a SATA driver from a floppy, so I downloaded that (motherboard: ABit V17). However, after formatting with NTFS on the current partition (not a new one), it prompted me to insert a VIA RAID Combo Driver. Why is this? I'm not going to use RAID!

Re: SpyBot

SATA RAID are often "Combo Drivers"

It will not setup a RAID by itself but will only allow the option.

If setup wants that driver I would give it.

On my boards I usually have at least two SATA RAID drivers that need to be installed.

Re: SpyBot

Now I've disabled RAID, when I F6, I get cannot find txtsetup.oem!
Also, before I disabled RAID, I tried to give it the drivers from the individual folders RaidTool and VIARAID but it wouldn't accept them (these folders are from the SATA driver folder)

Re: SpyBot

Is this the SATA driver you used:

Universal abit > Motherboard, Digital Speakers, iDome, AirPace, Multimedia

I am a bit lost in your process.

In general once this download creats the floppy it should be automatic from there.

Anyway are you still in the install process?

Are the SATA drivers failing to load?
