Unhappy Programs using Java for installer won't run

Problem trying to install Sybase PC Client 12.5.1 for ODBC connections for MS SQL to access a Sybase Database. The system is a Dell PE2650 running W2K Server SP4, and MS Sequel is running as well.

It took a long time to get to this point, but here is what I have found. In a nut shell, if I disconnect the computer from the network, then I can get the program installer to launce and work without any problems.

The Sybase PC Client 12.5.1 (or 12.5.4) use Java to run their installer wizard. The Java is not installed on the computer, it only exists on the CD. When you launch the program installer, you see a small box stating that the startup script is verifying the version of Java on the CD. Then the message changes to starting the installation wizard and the scanning bar goes for about a minute then just quits. Nothing else happens.

Even though this server is running W2K Server, it is not functioning as a real server, so almost all services that have to do with a server are removed (DHCP, etc). I have removed any references to Java from the system environment table (some of the Dell diags use an older version that is part of their directory structure). The Event Viewer only shows that another computer wants to be the master browser, so I have stopped the computer browser service (not that important for this system). There are no other issues in the Event log, and since this copy of Java is being run off the CD, I can't find any error log file. This system is on a flat network used in a Hospital Radiology environment and all address's are static, so there is no DHCP running.

Just wanting to see if anyone else has had a similar problem and what in the world could be on the network that would prevent Java from running.

Anyone have any ideas???

Thanks,
Ken Greenwood

Re: Programs using Java for installer won't run

I would install the latest version of java from sun. I would also consider if your version of SQL server (as well as the other server program) is compliant with W2K and if it needs the services that you turned off. Also is that program compliant with SQL Server?

2) For hardware issues also provide your system information: RAM, processor, etc. in addition to your OS.
3) If you have more than one OS on your computer, how does your problem relate to your other OS(s)? This is especially important for hardware issues.
4) Provide as much detail as possible, being specific as even the most minute detail could help others help you solve the problem. Please tell us what you have tried.
5) Respond with the result(s) of the suggestion(s) from the other users to provide feedback, even if this only means saying "this worked!"

Re: Programs using Java for installer won't run

As agreed above - make sure you uninstall any previous installation of java - visit the below link :

Sun Microsystems

And install the specific java system for your system - always good to have auto update checkboxed , therefore you are garunteed the latest , most stable java platform for your OS . Sun Systems provide regular updates via autoupdate . Sun Netbeans is always my preferrred choice and on all OS's I've used , never has any problem arisen .
