Formatting a 3.5" disk and a CD-ROM

Hi all, I tried formatting my 3.5" disk so that I can save some info from an adobe form but the computer will not let me do this, so how is the correct way to format a disk so that I can save information in it??


Also, I have some info on a CD-Rom but I tried to delete it so that I can put info there as well and the computer wont let me do it or I am doing it wrong, lol, so can someone please show this computer wannabe how to erase the CD-rom disk so that I can put adobe info on it? thanks guys

Is the disc write protect switch set correctly?

To write to a CD it has to be a CD-RW, CD-R's can only be written to once

how do i know if the disc write protect switch is set correctly?

and i might have a CD-R, I'll have to check, but I want to save my adobe form info on a 3.5 diskette and the computer just wont let me do this,

If XP insert disk & right click A: under My Computer & choose Format/ Quick Format.

Under any system you should be able to run this command:

Make sure all other windows are closed and open a command prompt.
start/run cmd
Then in the command prompt window type:
format a: /u
That will carry out an unconditional format and should make the disk usable for windows.

I have Windows XP Pro

I put the CD to begin to save the infomation and then it tells me this: "The disk you were saving to or the disk used for temporary files is full. Free some space on this disk and try again, or save to a different disk".

So then I would try to wipe the disk of all the information since I dont really need the info that already on the disk. I used Norton Systemworks 2003 to wipe the info on the disk so that I can save the new info and Norton tells me this: "Cannot delete Track01: Files on this CD are read-only. You can still copy new files to this writable CD which will replace files already on the disc."

But I tried to do that and it still would not work Is there anything I can do?

I also tried saving it on my 3.5 diskette and it tells me this:
"The disk in drive A is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?"

So I click on "yes" and then it starts to format until it says: "Format Complete"
Now I try to save the info on the diskette and it tells me : "The disk you were saving to or the disk used for temporary files is full. Free some space on this disk and try again, or save to a different disk".

But there is nothing on the diskette Could I have done something wrong? Please help, thank you guys all so much.

My first thought is are you sure that you have a CD-ReWriter drive, i.e. a drive that can actually RECORD CDs, rather than only being able to play them?

After that, though, I notice that you're getting the same error about the disk being full on both the CD and the floppy disk ..... so I'm wondering whether it's actually your hard disk that is full up. If you go into Windows Explorer or My Computer and right-click on the C: drive and select Properties from the menu, how much free space does it show on the pie chart image?

hey DjNafey, thanks for responding, we'll I checked and it says this:

Used Space: 9.29 GB

Free Space: 46.5 GB

Capacity: 55.8 GB

I have a CD Drive and a CD-RW Drive and the CD I have is a CD-RW, but I just dont know what to do

You will see in this search that the problem is with Adobe (pdf files) & perhaps an over long path name.

hi jephree, thanks for the link, i found it very useful, after doing much reading and searching, and looking around on the programs i finally saved the adobe reader info onto my disk! thanks guys all so much

this is what i did

First I would save the pdf file on my computer, it would be saved on "my documents",
Then I would send that pdf file onto the desktop which then becomes an icon on the screen for easy access.
Then I would right click on the pdf file icon and send it to the CD-RW drive (the blank disc is already inside the drive)
And then I copy the info from the there onto the disk! And it works great, my friend thanked me very much for it and I thank you guys very much too! Thanks.
